This question has been with me for awhile now. Basically the life of artist is not easy. To be full time doing art and making a living out of it is an incredible undertaking. Of course those artists who have made it with fame and fortune have no worries in daily supply of basic needs. But the artist who is trying full time face immense challenge if living in they expansive big cities. People may say that's the price of doing something you love, and if at the same time get pay for doing it would be living in a dream. Yet many artists live the life of many doubts and under appreciated by society. The recent film Loving Vincent is a good example trying to examine the state of mind Vincent Van Gogh had before killing himself, almost not conclusive but Van Gogh was deeply troubled by not being able to support himself and felt that he was a burden to his brother Theo. This crushing feeling of not being useful in an increasingly industrialised society where everything should have value and purpose. Yet when we looking at his paintings, the sensitivity to beauty and the passion to express the world through colours still evoke so much our emotions and wonderment from the brush strokes of Van Gogh. There is an urge to see the world and create anew that vision on canvas. A fire burning inside to celebrate the world one sees. Vincent may have also asked why he was not a doctor or a banker, he may also wonder why he was compelled to paint, even only one painting was sold in his life.
