FILMMAKER: KAL NG

Kal Ng, born March 4th, 1966 in Hong Kong, graduated with an architecture degree at the University of Oregon. From 1993 onward, he was involved in the Canadian independent film scene and made Stories of Chide the Wind - The Soul Investigator, which was invited to the Film Forum at 1995 Berlin International Film Festival. In 1997 he repatriated back to Hong Kong to witness the "hand-over" of the British colony back to People's Republic of China and subsequently founded the independent filmmaker co-op [Ying E Chi] with several liked minded filmmakers. In 1999 his second feature film Dreamtrips, shot in anamorphic widescreen, was invited to the Toronto International Film Festival, San Francisco International Film Festival and The Hong Kong International Film Festival. After the film he was recruited as the art director in the dot com start up Comicinema.com, intended to create a new era of digital content.

Ballroom One is his first venture into pure digital cinema, the architectural animation enters the semi-final in the FEIDAD Award - Far East International Digiral Architectural Design Award. In 2002 he completed his master degree in Comparative Literature, his thesis is Cinematic Architecture, a study of cinematic spaces in the films of Antonioni and Hitchcock. In 2005, a grant from the Alliance Francaise enabled him to produce a short called AnOther Morning in Paris, it was premiered at the French Cinepanorama the following year.

In 2007 he made a feature documentary titled The Beautiful Light, a cinematic essay documenting the trip of painter Samantha Kwan to her hometown, the UNESCO site of Kai Ping, in search of her root for inspirations. In 2009 he finished his PhD in Architecture, his thesis is Architectural Cinema - A Theory of Practice for digital Architectural Animation, it is a research for the technique to create 'spatial cinema' - architectural animations with a strong sense of space. Kal is presently a lecturer at the HKU Architecture School and Engineering school, His lecture topics include: City Imaginaries & Cinema Poetics; Virtual World, Real Bodies. the third feature film Nirvenuemade in 2015, is his third film that completes the Trilogy of Dream. A trilogy that spans 20 years in the making.
